Millennials, those born between 1980 and 2000 make up a group of about 8.9 million Canadians; they are the first generation to transition from childhood to adulthood during the Internet age and they are changing the way our world works.

Shaped by increased diversity, liberalized social norms, the self-esteem movement and high internet accessibility, Millennials are unlike any generation that came before them. They’re willing to give back to society and believe they’re the right people to do so. They grew up during a time of economic expansion and prosperity between 1980 and 2000. They were coddled by their parents and raised to believe they were special and deserve a high standard of living.

Because they were raised in a fast-paced, technology and media immersed society they operate in a different way from previous generations. Millennials are one of the most difficult groups to engage in research projects because they are highly mobile and less likely to participate in research studies. Yet, they are the emerging market as consumers, employees and citizens and therefore critical to the success of many brands, corporations, governments, and advocacy groups.

In 2011 Abacus Data (www.AbacusData.ca) founded a specialized research practice which offers expertise in the Millennial generation (www.CanadianMillennials.ca)  to help organizations better understand, prepare for and engage this new group of consumers, voters and employees.
